Cignetti on Alabama
Summary
Cignetti maximized portal talent, caught hot streak on weak schedule, unlike Spurrier who quit when losing.
Indiana took advantage of modern football when Cignetti was hired as he brought the best of the best from a good and veteran James Madison with him when he came over, then heavily supplemented through the portal. He also got lucky (and was able to keep through whatever means) a few really good guys that Allen had brought in before he was fired like the WR Cooper. Then they hit their stride at just the right time with a hot team and a really hot QB. Were they as good all year as they were at the end? Obviously not because they took it to another level at the end. But they were good enough to stay undefeated through a relatively weak schedule until they could develop into what they became. Good coaches do that. Good coaches who have a lot of luck do it more. Spurrier ran his mouth for a long time and was able to because his teams backed it up. When HE started getting his teeth kicked in he quit on his team in the middle of the season and was lauded for it by the media. We’ll see what happens with Cig. He better keep the bank balance high with all the checks he’s writing
