From a very uneducated fb perspective and without diving into OL play specifically, the run game is so unimaginative and predictable. Price and Love bailed out the run game last year with elite skills. There were times the ol just created no push (huge 3rd or 4th and short struggles last year( and other times where they just smashed teams ie USC. Too Jekyll and Hyde There is no elite speed to spread a team out east/west from the rb spot except freshmen and Denbrock rarely involves wr pitches/reverses. There is no eye candy wr motion to open up the box and no QB keep/rpo to keep the edge defenders honest. Tight end returning to the formation is probably a 95% run tell. Wide receivers in motion to the formation is to block an outside defender instead of slipping a block and being open in the flat. As soon as Carr puts his hands behind his back in pistol, it's a run. We don't use pistol enough to get a tailback running downhill. When lined up next to the QB, rb run is usually to the opposite side. When it's to the same side, there is zero momentum as he steps back to the QB first for the handoff. Why not a pitch out instead to speed up that action? Denbrock is enamored over several years with inside zone even against heavy boxes. At least he is throwing on 1st down more this year but I would be interested in the several year trend of how many inside zone calls he makes on first down especially to start drives. Our tight ends were non-existent in the pass game and we aren't really seeing the run game take off so why not experiment with going with more 4 wr sets and spread the field? On the other hand we have yet to see an extra OL replacing a tight end on dedicated run downs...not once I recall in 3 years We are simply not helping ourselves
