Rantings and Ravings From This Weekend
Summary
Pick/market: I don't have anything positive to say about the defense.
I don't have anything positive to say about the defense. It was horrendous. I'm still really baffled by all the talk around the offense and the pace/time of possession. The call-in show last night talked way more about the offense and Golesh's scheme hurting the defense. Like the defense didn't just wear down in the 2nd half. They didn't get a damn stop all night basically! They didn't play well at any point in the game. If they want to get off the field...stop someone on 3rd and forever! Florida ran 2 give up plays (a 3rd and long draw play). One of them the guy is running out of bounds and Winter's grabs his facemask. The other we have 4 dudes around the RB, and they all miss the tackle and it goes for a TD. Secondary was completely lost from the jump. Florida could have hung 60 on us easily. I think penalties are up across the sport. Watching other games (both pro and college), it seems like refs are really emphasizing holding this year. It's not just Auburn, so many other teams are having penalty issues it feels like. Guys jumping offsides on FGs, late hits out of bounds, taunting, roughing the passer, throwing down a gunner on a punt return who is 50 yards away from the play. Super undisciplined stuff like this in every game I've watched. But yes, Auburn needs to improve here. I think the OL is not good, but it's being overblown. They aren't horrendous. They are giving Byrum time the majority of his drop backs. Byrum needs to be willing to take off faster. No OL is going to hold up for 7-8 seconds every rep. The running game had more good plays than bad plays on Saturday, we just didn't stick with it because we were behind. I also think lack of running game is just as much on the RBs. I'm sorry but Cobb is the most overrated player on the team. He's not bad, but he's nowhere close some elite RB opposing coaching are gameplanning around. He's a scat back moonlighting as an every down workhorse. Besides the early INT, and some coverage sacks where he needed to take off, Brown played well. He's played better each week so far. He's the best QB we've had since probably Stidham (or maybe the good version of Nix at Auburn). Him and the USF WRs kept us somewhat in the game. We are paying him what the market demands. He's good enough to have been paid something similar by another school.
