Penya, I don't have a solution, but I would say that 3rd down is money down and that coaching D is a LOT easier on that down if you have legit PLAYAZ at rush end and CB1. Teams don't settle for punts like thirty years ago. OCs are going to try hard to get past the sticks on 3rd down and look hard for weaknesses to exploit. It's harder for them to find/exploit those weaknesses if their QB is either under pressure from the rush or they are having to account for that rusher with an extra blocker or other scheme and if their primary receiving threat is getting locked down by a real cover guy so the defense is able to sort of ignore him. It's been a while since we haven't been pretty mediocre at both of those critical positions. Our defense would look a LOT better if we had one strong pass rush threat, even if it were an interior DL like NT ($1 to @crococile22 ) and one true cover guy at CB. tl;dr - @Docdumpsta is probably right once again about talent issues on our D
