Quick Update-Defense
Summary
QB/LB: It's been a hot minute, but I think I recall the broad strokes.
It's been a hot minute, but I think I recall the broad strokes. Last year we weren't built to do what McDonald wanted to do and it took guys almost the entire season to figure out where they needed to be...I'm painting with an extremely broad brush. I don't know if things have been simplified a hair or if the change in performance is due to getting more of the right people in the right positions and guys finally grasping what's being asked of them.
One of the things that I am a little concerned with and am confident that we are going to get burned on sooner or later is with our pass rush. We aren't collapsing the pocket correctly and it's leaving some pretty wide open running/throwing lanes if the QB has enough athleticism and pocket awareness to get to them. Our DE's are almost getting too far upfield and our DT's are keeping things too narrow. It's basically moving the pocket into a line...if a QB can get outside of the line, they've got a 20 yard scramble gift wrapped to them. If the DE's don't go quite as far up field and the DT's keep it a little wider, it will prevent that from happening.
It did look better against ASU so maybe they've got that ironed out...but it's one of those things that I am just waiting to see happen.
