Notre Dame's September 21, 2026 live update reports that its Purdue-week depth chart now has an 'or' between Aneyas Williams and Nolan James Jr. This is an explicit co-listing, not confirmation that Williams is permanently benched or that either back has an exclusive starting role or fixed carry share.

In the same Purdue-week session, Marcus Freeman said Notre Dame safety Brauntae Johnson remained on his expected rehab track but still needed another couple of weeks before going full-go. He said Joey O'Brien had built practice trust and could see his role grow further with Luke Talich's situation; no return date, clearance or fixed snap allocation was confirmed.
