QB/RB: I actually saw a QB a few years back spike the ball to stop the clock as time was running down...on 4th Down.
I actually saw a QB a few years back spike the ball to stop the clock as time was running down...on 4th Down.
THEN just a few years ago in what might have been Nico I's last game at Tennessee, he ran the ball out of bounds to stop the clock as his team was setting up for a possible winning play...I forget FG or TD. BUT....the clock had expired mid-play and he never even gave that a thought prior to the play beginning.
My point is that a Coach MUST make it absolutely CLEAR to his QB the time on the clock, down and distance, and EXACTLY what he should do on that final play. Ford needed to be told by multiple PSU coaches, "Do NOT score on this next play! Repeat to me what I just told you...do NOT score a TD on this play. Fall down short of the Goalline and we win."
How do I know what to say? I had the exact same situation as Ford back in my team's 2017 State Semi-Final Game. The opposition's only chance was for us to score and for them to drive and to score a TD and 2-Point Conversion.
I made the RB repeat to me exactly what I had said, so there was no confusion. As a coach you just can't assume that a player at any level fully understands the situation and has the good sense not to do something dumb.
