Purdue head coach Barry Odom discusses 52-38 loss to UCLA, looks ahead to Notre Dame
Summary
Pick/market: Summarizing what Purdue head coach Barry Odom said to the media in attendance during Monday's press conference ahead of their home game against Notre Dame.
Summarizing what Purdue head coach Barry Odom said to the media in attendance during Monday's press conference ahead of their home game against Notre Dame.  - Thought there were some things they did well against UCLA. There were also things that were nowhere close to winning football. Have to make those fixes as quickly as you can. Sees a lot of positive work happening and taking place in terms of corrections being made. Every single area they didn't play good enough. He has to do a better job as a head coach.  - Have to come away with touchdowns instead of field goals. Have to eliminate turnovers. Done some really good things on offense, but have to get those things cleaned up and completed.  - On the offense and its potential: Credits the development of the players that stayed in their program. The playmaking ability they brought to the roster. QB play has been great for three weeks. Guys have stepped up and made big-time catches. Need to improve on red zone, third-down percentages, and turnover margin. If they can take that next step, they can be really, really good on that side of the ball.  - Defensively, there are a number of things they have to fix. It starts up front with rush defense, perimeter run support, getting off blocks, safety fits, corner alignment. In the pass game, they need to simplify some things so they can play with the skills that we have. If you can't play good run defense, it's a hard conference to be in if you can't stop the run.  - Thought special teams gave them a chance the other night, minus the penalties on the punt return. The fake punt was executed flawlessly.  - Really likes his team. Needs to keep making improvements in all three areas and they'll get the team right where they need to be.  - They have a huge task coming up with a very good Notre Dame team. One of the tops in the country at every level that you look at. A great opportunity for their players at home. Both fanbases look forward to this game from a geographic standpoint. Doesn't think Notre Dame has missed a beat on offense, despite losing multiple players to the NFL. Both running backs are playing at a high level. They are unbelievable up front. Quarterback play is elite. They've got receivers that can blow the top off of coverage and run really well after the catch. I don't see a lot of weakness in what they do.  - On Ryan Browne's improvements this year: Pre-snap reads. Going through progression. The amount of time he's poured in to play the position. He's invested a great, great deal. Another year in the system helps him out. Ten guys around him playing at a higher level has helped him out. Also, he's making some big-time throws. He's also got them in and out of some calls after the coach-to-player clicks off that there is no other way to do that unless you've invested the time that he has in what it takes to play the position. Right now, through three games, he has done exactly what winning quarterbacks do.
