Rutgers offensive line still looking for clarity three games into the season
Summary
Injury: Bobby, good article on the mixing of positions on the offensive line!
Bobby, good article on the mixing of positions on the offensive line! Too early in Turner’s time at Rutgers, to know if he is or will be an upgrade vs. Flats! Early indications are that the offensive line has NOT taken well to Turner’s coaching techniques or philosophy on mixing all the positions. Yes, they collectively played their best game vs. USC. But, to be fair, it is only 3 games in. The revolving door at left tackle is very concerning, and to be fair, Needham has not looked very good at left tackle, plus seemed to have breakdowns in pass pro, when playing right tackle. Small has played well at left tackle, my opinion, and against USC, did not follow him closely to see how he did vs. the super freshmen, Waffle. Did he hold up? Or was he beaten badly on a few plays? I have always liked Vigna, another “smart” Bergen Catholic guy, so also think it was wise to play him in the 2nd half at left tackle, and see how he handles the position. Turner appears to be searching for the right mix to complement Asamoah and Salami. Looks like he has settled in with Giwa at right tackle, but is still experimenting with Needham, Chin, Small, and Vigna? Chin was really coming into his own last season, bf getting derailed by injury. Bobby, IMO, one other important aspect of trying to mix and match your best offensive linemen, it also requires each player to have the athleticism needed, plus the mental abilities to comprehend the differences in their assignments from various positions, and then be able to execute the play. Flat’s really did not do this, mixing player positions, in my opinion, was more so focused on the 5 players operating as a cohesive unit, to deliver the optimum results. That is why I think you saw the positive progress from our offensive line, under Flat’s coaching, especially in year 3. Full transparency, I had, and still think very highly of Flats, especially for what he was able to accomplish with the Rutgers offensive line. Yes, Turner may turn out to be a more active and energetic recruiter, but with Flat’s you had outstanding coaching skills, and you saw tangible progress. The jury is still out on Turner. Bobby, if you can answer this ? Do you see the top offensive linemen as follows: Asamoah, Salami,Giwa, Chin, Needham, Vigna, or Small? Then , maybe Jones, and Logan Anthony, are next in the mix, with possibly Oliveira?
