What an incredible addition to our football program, and our community generally. OU not doing everything to keep him seems like the zenith of stupidity, insanity and/or incompetence. Whatever the reason I couldn’t be more thrilled. Obviously on the field he is definitely our defensive MVP, but for overall POY team honors I see it as a two horse race (unless Nico parlays his last game’s performance into future great play) between Sammy and the Dark Knight. BUT even setting aside the reason he is at UCLA, his on field performance, I have been incredibly impressed by how intelligent, articulate and charismatic this young man is when being interviewed. Good looking kid too. Many of these young men really rock the UCLA blue polos, but none more so than Sammy. After his playing days are over he could easily make a living in front of the camera as an analyst or even potentially UCLA’s next Mark Harmon. I say all this as a self assured, comfortable-in-his-own-skin, straight man. Deal with it. One message I’d like to send to ALL UCLA student athletes especially those that get to UCLA via the transfer portal: Assuming you work your arse off and invest your blood sweat and tears into being the highest performing student athlete you can be while donning those iconic 4 letters, to my mind and to tens of thousands of other alumni YOU ARE A BRUIN FOR LIFE if you choose to be, even if you finish your college career here after only being at our beloved university for one year. A good number of us were transfers from JCs or other colleges and our blood runs as deep blue and gold as any 4 year attendee. It’s not the time spent at UCLA that determines your “Bruinhood” it’s your effort, passion and dedication to UCLA while there and the years that follow. That goes for Sammy and all others. So continue to rock those awesome blue polos, hoodies, hats, etc from this day forward knowing, with confidence, that you are a True Blue Bruin, FOR LIFE! Extra credit if you don the Bruin gear at your open casket having the mortician craft a “fours up” salute to amuse and inspire your end of life celebration attendees. Not dignified enough for you? Well, don’t take life so seriously or you’ll never get out of it alive. Cheers Sammy and keep it going!
