I’m not really saying that UConn is Notre Dame, just that they were physically larger and in many cases faster. I’m not using that as an excuse it’s just fact. Having said that, I’ve made good friends with quite a few former southern Miss players over the years and I’ve seen first hand how you play the game matters. That’s what I meant by saying I knew how Marchant would react. I just rewatched the Florida game where Marchant was giving them the business and we lost the game 20-6 and they were national champs the year before. They had big name players who were bigger and faster. The very first thing Spurrier said after the game was, “those boys came to play.” I’ve seen first hand what effort can do if you can execute. I’m really not trying to use the things I said as an excuse but I just don’t think he has enough talent right now and not enough players who can play at a high level all the time. We would play good defense for 2 plays and then give up a long third down conversion. Our talent may be less than what we want, but there’s no doubt that we should play better. No doubt. I think we can.
