Overall, well said. I'm not pinning the 1st quarter entirely on the coaching staff. There are differing opinions about having TC in the game to start for 1-2 plays, but not throwing that pass out of bounds was on him. If Carter catches a perfect pass in stride from Hammond, it's a massive gain and he may have scored. Hammond also had a wide open WR later in the quarter, but there was obviously some miscommunication on the route. The defense was on the field almost the entire initial 12 minutes of the game. You're correct that we were fortunate it wasn't worse than 10-0. To your overall point, you're spot on that the team can't afford to get off to slow starts in most of our games.
