Matt Rhule ruled Nebraska's Carter Nelson out for Michigan State with a knee injury, saying it was not an ACL injury but declining to give a return timetable. He described the rest of the team as largely ready despite routine bruises; Nelson's absence is confirmed for this week, not for an estimated number of later games.

Rhule said Nebraska has deliberately avoided overusing freshman Jamal Rule and described him as healthy entering Michigan State. Rule is already handling third-down pass-protection assignments and winning some physical matchups, beyond simply carrying the ball; Rhule still wants weekly development and did not announce an exclusive lead-back workload.

Rhule said Nebraska's current defense includes four-down, quarters-based looks but is not static. Against North Dakota, it used boundary simulated pressures and Cover 2 when the offense slid protection toward the field. That describes an existing adjustment, not a newly installed defensive scheme.

Ahead of Michigan State, Rhule said Nebraska has practiced against a similar quarters-based defense all spring and summer. He expects press coverage outside and stressed beating press, making blocks and making defenders miss, rather than rebuilding the offense for a wholly unfamiliar scheme.
