Here is everything that Vanderbilt's Miles Capers said at Tuesday's availability about his forced fumble that led to the game-winning touchdown and more.
"What have the last couple days been like for you? How many uh do you know how many missed texts you have?"
"Yeah, I got a lot of missed texts right now, but it's a good feeling. I'm glad we came out with the win."
Walk us through the play pre- snap to to you forcing the fumble. What's going on in your head?
"I just remember running off the field and they said 'field goal block' and coach Lea said, 'Don't let the quarterback out,' and then they crashed the right (side) and then I ran across three people and I just (saw) the ball just ripped at it and they came out and Cayden (Daniels) recovered it."
"Were you surprised that they—you know, because they you could have done so many different things in terms of how to waste the rest of the clock. Were you surprised that to which you know the play they went with?"
"I was surprised but I was happy too because like it gave us a chance to win. So yeah.
"Can fathom that that happened still? Like, has it sunk in?"
"Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm just happy it happened because I didn't want to go on the other side of that. So yeah.
"It's called 'field goal block.' Is that is that something that you guys practice on defense? How many reps do you get in that kind of situation as a defense?"
"We didn't practice that at all."
"So he just he just called it on on a whim that one time?"
Yeah.
"So what's the conversation in the huddle like for that?"
"It was confusion, but we had to do something to get get the play. So, we just made a play."
"Were they as confused as you were, maybe?"
"Yeah. The three dudes in front of me was like, "What? What? What's going on?" And then that just happened.
"Who brought that up? Just walk me through the the conversation, you know, of that whole thing."
"I think it was coach (Steve) Gregory and Coach (Nick) Leszynski said, 'field goal block' and then he just ran it.
"So it was the same personnel that you would normally have on a field goal?"
Field goal. Yeah. Yeah.
"So when you get the instructions, what are you thinking? I mean, you didn't have a lot of time to to process."
"Go make a play. Do something to win. Two minutes, mean, that's all we could do.
"Can you take us through like the moments after the play? I saw you were like galloping through it. So you knew it was out?
"Yeah, I blacked out. I remember nothing. I just (saw) the ball and Cayden jumped on it. It's just out."
"How many times you watched the video?"
Well, it's all on the internet, so probably like a million times.
"What's it mean to you that you've been a part of two of the most significant defensive plays in the program history? Is that that's something you think about? What's it mean to you?"
"Well, man, it means a lot because those are big wins and obviously we want to win. So, it means a lot to me.
"I'm sure by this time now you guys are starting to lock in, you know, move on to SEC play. Just as a defense, I'm sure there's probably a lot of things you guys probably want to clean up."
Yeah.
"When you guys are, you know, facing another, I guess, similar style quarterback that can beat you with the arm and the legs. Just what adjustments defensively do you feel like you guys have to make going into this week?"
"There's really no adjustments. Just we got to play good football and that's all it come down to is playing good football and doing our jobs and the rest will go from there."
"You guys are three and 0, but like you kind of alluded to, like probably still a lot like that you haven't done, I guess. How much do you feel like you have to prove still?"
"We got a lot to prove. We always feel like we're the underdog and we still got to keep winning to prove everybody wrong."
"Clark mentioned Saturday like you wear his jersey number, his his old jersey number. What, I guess, can you give us the background on that and what that means to you?"
"It means a lot. My freshman year, our first freshman meeting here, he said, I got a a number that I want to give out and everybody's sitting right there in these seats and he was like, I'm going to give it to somebody that means a lot to me and gave it to me and I just kept it all year."
"Do you know why he picked you? Did he ever give you an explanation?"
"I mean, I did I think it's because I did a workout and I was recovering from Covid or something and I threw up and I kept working out. I think that just (was why it was) given to me."
"So, how many when you checked your phone for the first time after the game, how many text messages did you have that were new? What was in those?"
"All of I mean a lot of them. Instagram, Snapchats, Twitter, all of them."
"Did you get any that stood out, like from somebody you didn't expect or or anything?"
"I can't remember. There's a lot of them."
"Do you ever think about how far you've come since that workout where you threw up back in the day?"
"Yeah. I can. This program came a long way, too. So, I'm just—I'm proud of where we at right now and we just got to keep going to get higher. So, yeah."
"Was it a conditioning thing? Is that what it was?"
"Summer workout and we had to run stadium steps and stuff and I wasn't working out the days before and then I finally got my first workout and I just threw up all the stuff that I was eating. As a freshman, you know, you got to be on time and stuff and eat before the workout and I chug something up and it came out."
