We are battle tested…
Summary
Pick/market: We’ve achieved the closest thing to a best-case scenario through 3 weeks of CFB with this strength of schedule.
We’ve achieved the closest thing to a best-case scenario through 3 weeks of CFB with this strength of schedule. The front end gauntlet could pay HUGE dividends for us going forward.
We played the two best offenses we will face this entire regular season (by a good margin IMO) with the two best quarterbacks we will face this entire regular season (by a good margin IMO) and some might even argue the two best defenses we will see the remainder of the regular season.
We have escaped this stretch not scathed, but rather beaming with upside and confidence. 2-1 ranked #16 in the country, and we might as well be 3-0 with the recognition and respect we’ve earned from the national audience at the hands of Kienholz and Brohm.
And this team—unlike Plummer or Moss’s—has untapped potential.
Going forward, we will be playing inferior offenses and defenses with inferior quarterbacks, which will allow us to play more aggressively and tactically on both sides of the ball.
With Kienholz rapidly gaining confidence, we will see him progress through reads and hit throws in real-time that he hasn’t before. We’ve already witnessed to the explosiveness of the Richardson-McCoy duo, but we still haven’t even seen the Brown duo at full strength behind a jelling and fully intact OL—a unit that has consistently improved every year under Brohm.
I’m expecting a similar trajectory of improvement we saw under Shough’s team, except this time the competition weakens. They will just keep getting better and better. I see Brohm and Ivey making offenses significantly more one-dimensional and blitzing more and more, similar to the bowl game Ivey called against Cincinnati a few years ago.
By the end of the year—if we’ve carved a way into the CFP—we will have a team that got punched early, but withstood its tests and fulfilled at least some of its potential by the time we could be facing teams like Miami, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Indiana, etc.
What an opportunity!
