Didn’t think these talking points were necessary…but reading some of the catastrophe posts this week, perhaps they are— —Football is the ultimate warrior sport. Nothing else like it. When a player gets injured, it’s next man up. —It doesn’t matter if the next man was in fact part of the 2nd group on the depth chart at that point. Once they begin practicing with the 1’s, it’s treated like an open competition for the position. —Often the guy isn’t the guy once given the opportunity. So you find another guy. —With skill positions, injuries often ripple through the playbook. This is not always a bad thing, because it requires the staff to earn their pay by requiring them to coach & scheme for the players they have available. Something that coaches should have already prepared for, or else they’ve chosen the wrong career. —Finally, the problem isn’t that a football team loses key players to injury; because this is part of the game. The problem is using this as an excuse. Teams that do this are fragile and have problems that go beyond injured players.
