Can Southern Miss finally play it straight up against Tulane?
Summary
DL/LB: Interesting to see if they address the defensive personnel, particularly the D-line.
Interesting to see if they address the defensive personnel, particularly the D-line. I know, I know, none of them are good, etc., but UCONN outweighed us 310 to 260, with the starting line,Tulane will be about the same, that's not sustainable. If the argument is it doesn't matter because we rotate so many guys anyway with same result, I would argue that finding the best starting 11 that rep enogh together to gel certainly does matter. I would replace Gross with Stegall, Gross back up Cairo, and probably Pernas for Lewis, using Lewis more as a down and distance pass rush specialist. Stegall doesn't move well laterally, probably doesn't disengage blocks as well as he should, but he's 330 pounds or so, he's harder to move and has some bull rush. We need the space eater player in there we had with Gibson last year and that's not Gross' game. He constantly gets pushed out of the hole and is not impactful. Maybe if he was moved around and used the burst to the backfield he showed from junior college from the weak side he could be more effective. I realize some of these groupings weren't great in the spring, but guys like Pernas and Stegall have looked stronger in the games in limited snaps, and I'm still hoping to see something more from Jeffrey Rush.
