Knight for Heisman!
Summary
Pick/market: I honestly don't think even that will be enough.
EastIDBruin said... (original post) Let's get him 30 tds and he'd be in consideration. show more I honestly don't think even that will be enough. Here are the last 3 RBs to win the Heisman, and they're all feature backs who didn't share major backfield time: Derrick Henry: 2200 yards, 5.6ypc, 148ypg, 28 TDs Mark Ingram: 1658 yards, 300 yards receiving, 6.1ypc, 118ypg, 20 TDs (17 rushing) Reggie Bush: 1740 yards rushing, 478 yards receiving, 8.7ypc, 133ypg, 18 TDs (16 rushing) Those were the stats needed for teams that were in the National Title race, and don't take into account the quality of competition. The Mark Ingram year, Toby Gerhart had 200 more yards and 11 more TDs (and almost 30 more YPG)...and came second bc he was on an 8-5 Stanford team. The other problem is, this is just a bad year to be in the B1G and want Heisman buzz. Ohio State lost to the SEC. Oregon lost to a basement dweller Big12 program. Michigan lost to Western Michigan (i get it, not officially, but we all know they did). Indiana doesn't look nearly as dominant as they did last year (although bet against them at your peril). The perception this year is that the SEC is back on top, and they have Arch Manning, Trinidad Chambliss, and a host of other talented players who are going to be nearly impossible for anyone else to overcome without a season so spectacular that it cannot be ignored. Knight's YPG is sitting at 115, which is relatively low compared to his peers-- both prior winners and nationally this year. His TD production is about where you'd want it to be, which means he would need to continue his pace of 2-3 TDs PER GAME to merely be in the discussion, and UCLA will need to win 8-9 games minimum. And Jadan Baugh at Florida will have to slow his pace (he's currently tied with Knight in TDs and has almost identical YPC/more yards total/ypg/in the SEC).
