Jacksonville State coach Charles Kelly said the passing game helped open the run game against Georgia Southern: with defenders about seven yards off the line, the offense must show it will throw over them even if the shot misses. He wants more offensive plays after only 52 offensive plays, with a turnover and a three-and-out contributing; this explains the current balance problem, not a new pass-heavy system.

Kelly described Caleb Nix as Jacksonville State's starting safety, kickoff contributor, field-goal holder and punt returner who has also worked on the punt team. His versatility is an existing personnel asset; the coach's comment that Nix could be a backup quarterback was hypothetical, not an announced quarterback assignment.
