That’s more to do with the evolution of offenses in college, and tempo, paired with almost every team has a mobile QB who can run. Then add green dot helmet communication to boot. Those defenses you speak of played teams with run heavy, run often offenses with pure pocket passers. Much easier to defend and be a good DC back then. But I do agree with should have pressed more on the outside and not given up so much cushion underneath to their WRs. I get the early gameplan and thinking, but after watching TC carving us up for a couple drives our coaches should have been quicker to adjust on the fly
