The Most Important Stretch of Luke Fickell's Tenure at Wisconsin
Summary
Coaching: Unless there is a dramatic swing in one direction or the other, it appears that Shawn Eichorst is going to wait until the end of the season to decide LF's future at UW.
Unless there is a dramatic swing in one direction or the other, it appears that Shawn Eichorst is going to wait until the end of the season to decide LF's future at UW. But right now the remaining games can be broken down into two distinct chapters. The first is the next five against Penn State, MSU, UCLA, USC, and Iowa. The next chapter is against Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, and Minnesota.
The next five games are against much tougher opponents than the last four. Indeed, ESPN's FPI has the Badgers as underdogs in four of the next five games, and favorites in three of the last four. Therefore I think these next five games will determine if LF comes back, since if the team does poorly during these five, it's probably not going to matter if they win out over the remaning four. On the other hand, if the team does well in the next five, it's unlikely that they will do poorly over the weaker portion of the schedule, and the hopes for LF will be closer to realization.
Here is my opinion as to what the perception of LF and UW will be, depending on their record over these next five games:
5-0: Consideration for National Coach of the Year, and a top ten ranking
4-1: Very impressive, and maybe a shot at the CFP
3-2: Pretty good, and Badger football is back!
2-3: Not bad, now finish stong to get to eight wins
1-4: Must win out for LF to keep his job
0-5: All hail interim Head Coach Matt Mitchell!
