Through three weeks of the 2026 season, Penn State football receiver Koby Howard was performing at a level we've not seen from his position in Happy Valley since Jahan Dotson's 2021 All-American campaign. National buzz was building before a Big Ten opener against Wisconsin but it turns out Howard won't be available Saturday and likely for the near future. "It's not season-ending, but it will be an extended period of time," Nittany Lions head coach Matt Campbell said on Wednesday regarding an unspecified injury. "I will do a great job as we get closer to his return to play, letting you know certainly when he'll be back." Howard proved to be among the country's premier playmakers versus non-conference competition, averaging nearly 29 yards per catch on 12 receptions with three total touchdowns, including a 20-yard run last Saturday. It was the kind of sophomore breakout that players dream about. "I think that's probably more so the disappointing part of it for him, is just knowing how hard he's worked," Campbell said. "And the reality is he'll work just as hard to get back and better than ever." As this injury news sunk in for Penn State staff and players, feedback suggested there is genuine optimism regarding the offense's ability to overcome Howard's absence. "I know there are dudes that are really gonna bring that (receiver) room up," defensive back Jeremiah Cooper said on Wednesday. "It sucks to lose Koby, but it's next man up and I have full confidence in that room because I've seen the whole year doing their thing. So I can't wait to see them ball." There are multiple layers to replacing Howard within receiver plans. Plus, holistically, there is worthy cause to explore impact of other position groups. "We're gonna do everything we can to hold it down, and look forward to having him back," receiver Brett Eskildsen said. Let's take a closer look at four ways in which Penn State can adjust to the temporary loss of a star player as Big Ten tests get underway...
