No. 23 Texas A&M vs No. 10 LSU: 3 key matchups that will decide Week 4
Summary
Pick/market: COLLEGE STATION — There may not be a game on the Week 4 slate that means more to both teams than the Texas A&M football and LSU matchup.
COLLEGE STATION — There may not be a game on the Week 4 slate that means more to both teams than the Texas A&M football and LSU matchup. The No. 23 Aggies (2-1, 0-1) hit the road for the first time to take on the No. 10 Tigers (2-1, 0-1), both coming off emotional losses to conference foes. The Maroon and White were stunned by Kentucky at Kyle Field, while Lane Kiffin and LSU fell on the road to his former team. Now, with a dreaded second early-season loss looming, both programs have a lot on the line when they meet in Death Valley Saturday night. With game-breaking players on both sides, we take a look at three of the most important matchups to identify which will have the biggest impact in Week 4: QB Marcel Reed vs LSU's secondary All eyes will be on Marcel Reed, and there may not be a player in college football who needs a critic-silencing performance more than he does. The Aggies signal-caller threw two interceptions in Week 3 and now has three in as many games this season. His early-season performance had his head coach comparing his play to that of a pitcher struggling to throw strikes. Not ideal rhetoric for a returning starter expected to take another step this season. Next up is the Tigers' middle-of-the-pack secondary, which is surrendering 203.6 yards per game through the air. Opposing quarterbacks are completing 64.8% of their passes against the group, averaging 10 yards per reception. Add in the fact that the Tigers just lost safety Dashawn Spears to a torn ACL, and Reed and this offensive unit need to find a way to be productive against a group that has shown some early-season vulnerability. LT Tyree Adams vs Edge Princewill Umanmielen Early numbers suggest this may be an advantage for LSU, setting the table for a big opportunity for A&M's left tackle, Tyree Adams, to make a statement. Through three games, Princewill Umanmielen is leading the Tigers in pass rush grade (minimum 10 snaps) with an 86.6, according to Pro Football Focus. Conversely, only Blake Ivy has a worse pass-blocking grade than Adams' 61.9. Umanmielen has already tallied six sacks in three games, along with six hurries, two QB hits, and 16 pressures. He has a 21.4% win percentage on true pass sets, meaning he's creating pressure or getting a sack on more than one in every four pass plays. Adams has yet to give up a sack this season but has allowed seven hurries and eight pressures on 122 plays. I assume the Aggies will roll a tight end to that side and may even have a running back chip on his way out of the backfield. However, this is a matchup that, if it isn't handled properly, could create game-wrecking opportunities. Sam Leavitt vs A&M front-seven As talented as Sam Leavitt can look at times as a passer, the LSU signal-caller could hurt A&M the most on Saturday night with his legs. With that in mind, the Aggies' front seven will have to be on point and find ways to contain Leavitt and not let him get outside to make game-breaking plays. Leavitt is second on the team in rushing yards with 198 and is first on the team in rushing touchdowns with six. He is averaging a team-high (minimum 20 attempts) five yards per carry. Add in the fact that he is also completing 61.3% of his passes and has thrown for 732 yards and three touchdowns, and he is a true dual-threat who will command the Aggies' best. Expect A&M to have a "cage-rush" game plan, designed to keep Leavitt in the pocket and force him to beat them with his arm, not his legs. Leavitt has already thrown five interceptions this season, so he has shown himself to be turnover-prone. But the Aggies have seemingly struggled to contain mobile QBs, and if he is able to go out there and play free, it may be a long night for the Maroon and White.
