Four downs: What was learned (and we did learn some things!) from Rutgers football's big win over Howard
Summary
Injury: Kristian, you are 100% correct on the potential to see improvements in the defense, when you factor in Wright and Anderson are both now playing as linebacker and cornerback!
Kristian, you are 100% correct on the potential to see improvements in the defense, when you factor in Wright and Anderson are both now playing as linebacker and cornerback! Forget the Howard game, you could see their impact in the USC Game. Then add in Walker starting to play to his potential, each game as Walker grows in his reads, etc, means the defense has more potential to improve. Then, add in Jones starting to play better at the cornerback position, again, another possibility for defensive improvements. To me, the key for our defense to truly improve, is some type of improvements in a pass rush! We really need either Kromah, Burnett, GNAGO, and even Davis, to improve their play! Totally unknown if we are going to see that improvement as the season progresses, outside of what we saw against an inferior opponent in Howard! Hopefully, Porter is not seriously injured, he was playing better as the season progressed. Same goes for Sanders, another key performer! Not to comfortable with whoever was backing up Sanders. Kristian, Vigna, Needham, Salami, Asamoah, and Giwa may be our best offensive line combination, going forward! Until Chin is completely healthy, and ready to challenge for either a guard or tackle. IMO, based on how Rutgers played vs, a loaded USC team, yes, we lost that game because we did not play “clean”;offensively, but we were able to play competitively against the USC offensive line, running backs, and wide receivers! That effort and keeping USC. from dominating our defense, gives me a glimmer of hope that we can improve incrementally on defense! The Indiana game will be another humongous test for our defense! Here is to hoping we meet that challenge, and see another step forward in the growth of our defense, win or lose that game.
