QB/LB: I read this post and felt that I needed to chime in even though I am mainly a reader and have only posted 9 times in 20 years.
I read this post and felt that I needed to chime in even though I am mainly a reader and have only posted 9 times in 20 years. I grew up with Dawgs in my houshold as my Grandfather toke me to games regularly since I was 8 years old and I will be 67 next month. The Huskies have always been my passion and I seldom ever missed a game. Back in the day when games were not televised like they are today, my Grandfather and I would listen to games together on the radio and I would watch him pace the floor nervously throughout all 4 quarters. Honestly, today I feel differently....I will always love the Dawgs but my passion and commitment has regressed quite a bit. Mainly because of what this NIL program has done to college sports and to our college athletes and coaches. I do get it that today everything is about money and selfish desires and school loyaty and traditions has taken a back door. Every year since the beginning of NIL in 2021, most teams load up with new players from the transfer portal and the highest monetary bidder usually wins. The minute you get really excited about a young freshman QB, he leaves or threatens to leave the program for brighter pastures...aka more money and a better chance for an NFL carrier and coaches are pretty much are on the same carousel. I have always loved college sports more than the pros because I loved how college sports were driven by school loyalty, team chemistry and the raw passion of amateur athletes competing for the love of the sport and gaining a pretigious college degree. The game used to be anchored in regional identity, traditional bowl tie-ins and deep seated rivalries. Today I feel that the historic conferences have fractured completely so schools can chase massive television revenue. While the talent on the field remains spectacular, the relentless movement of players and coaches make it hard for me to find that passion that I once had. Possibly I am old school and too much of a traditionalist and not open to change but I will say that college sports, especially the Dawgs, used to have my all of heart and today that is just not the case.
