Three things we learned during KU's spring practice
Summary
Cole Ballard has slight edge in KU QB competition; Chase Jenkins limited by injury; battle continues into fall camp.
Spring practice has come and gone for KU. It was a shorter spring for the Jayhawks as they took care of business over a four week stretch. There was plenty to pick up on as the 2026 roster practiced for the first time together on a consistent basis. What did we learn? Here are three key takeaways… The quarterback competition is still up for grabs (Photo: USA TODAY Sports) If you were looking for KU to go the route of naming a starter early, then you're probably disappointed. Nobody truly grabbed the competition by the scruff of the neck and as a result the battle is going to go into preseason training camp. The job is still up for grabs but I think one player might have a slight lead. If the season started today, I think Cole Ballard would be KU's starter. Now, the season doesn't start today and there could be another twist down the road. Rice transfer Chase Jenkins was limited in what he could do for most of the spring due to a soft tissue injury he suffered prior to the start of the spring. He didn't do much 11 on 11 work during KU's practice practices, which puts him behind Ballard and Isaiah Marshall. Ballard and Marshall were the two who were with the 1s during every open portion of practice I saw. If you went into practice without any knowledge of the quarterback competition and were asked to pick the leader of the group I think the pick would've been Ballard. It's a small thing, but that dynamic within an offense matters. Marshall could still win the starting job, but he'll need to take another step forward over the next few months and have a very strong preseason camp. The same could be said for Ballard, though I think he has a slight edge as we go into the summer.
