Postgame Thoughts
Summary
QB/OL: Losing wasn’t ideal, but just some notes from what I saw in the stadium.
Losing wasn’t ideal, but just some notes from what I saw in the stadium. Happy to hear what others picked up.
Bryce played a great game. Always work to do, but put some really nice balls into some great windows. Keeping the drive alive and finding JJ streaking was a great use of the feet to extend the pocket. I thought he did a great job working through some reads and he put some balls in spots exactly where the receiver was going to be. Him and Marsh seem to be on the same page between route and ball placement. I’m not convinced that INT wasn’t a miscommunication on the route between him and the receiver from what I saw. Just seemed off compared to what we saw all day. When Bryce ran I thought he did a great job getting some positive yards and keeping the defense honest on the RPO. Wasn’t a huge fan of the QB sneak call on 4&1 but always easier to say after the fact and that’s not his call.
Run game looked far better. The OL started to bully the DL and when Frazier went out I was holding my breath wondering what would happen. Even though very brief, the run game overall looked far better with blocks reaching the secondary. The passing game kept the safeties honest. But you were averaging over 6 yards per play in that game offensively. Seemed like we opted to run more vertical than horizontal this game. That was my view, haven’t confirmed that. And it seemed to work.
Passing, man it’s awesome to have receivers like this. JJ and Marsh are gifted. Their ability to do that quick twitch turn after catching and get up field is artwork. Also their ability to elevate and get the ball is awesome. That toe drag by Marsh is another highlight in his reel. Landing JJ might be one of my favorite off season moves.
Statistically made no sense losing that game. At one point I think it was like 330 yards to 95. But sports don’t always make sense and sometimes that’s why you throw stats out the window. If you would have told me Iowa had to go 90+ yards to win the game against our defense, I probably would have taken that every time. Now that being said, I’m a much bigger advocate of keeping the ball in your hands and controlling your destiny. I think you needed to get creative and get a first down to cap that final drive, especially with how Bryce was playing. But again, penalties just have me puzzled. Penalties are like turnovers in my book. You’re giving away free yards and either setting the offense back or keeping a drive alive. I don’t know the answer but by game 4 I’m shocked at the number.
I was but wasn’t surprised by the DL pressure. Iowa has a heavy upper class line and so it didn’t shock me they held a nice bubble. Even when blitzing the LB at the end, they held the pocket. I think the pressure was there at times but Brown was looking to get it out. Unsure if we start to see a little more zone as those extended plays are challenging in man sometimes. Hats off to Brown on a few throws. He put some balls into windows that had to be an inch or two out of the reach from our defender. I remember looking at the board wondering how he fit that ball there.
I thought the crowd was loud and into it, another good showing by the Stadium.
Punting, another really nice day. Burying them at the end with that roll couldn’t have been better. He did exactly what he was asked.
I don’t make officiating excuses as that’s not the reason we lost that game. Iowa played the full 60 even when it made no sense to and they won, hats off to them. But a few things I couldn’t tell without hearing the broadcast so maybe someone can shed light if it was discussed:
Bryce was tackled (going into South End zone) and landed around the 3. I believe his knee hit a little sooner but he was falling forward. They marked it at the 5. Didn’t understand why video assist didn’t adjust that spot. You have to score from the 5, so irrelevant and still no excuse there but that one had me perplexed how it was 2 yards off from what I saw. Unsure if the TV covered it.
Wide receiver coming back in and touching the ball from Iowa after out of bounds. Maybe someone can shed light on that one for me. Was it because he was forced out? And do you only need 1 foot to restablish yourself? Only asking this because they reviewed if Brown passed the line on the throw and not this catch from what they told us. So not sure I understand that rule. Never have I seen so many tipped balls go a teams way. Sports… will always humble ya.
Time run off. In college I think you cannot hike and spike a ball in less than 2 seconds. Would that have been the case at the end without the injury timeout? Hoping Daly is okay, that kid has an awesome motor. When I saw him go down I immediately held my breath.
To be clear, these are not why we lost. I was just curious if the broadcast said anything because I enjoying knowing the rules of the game and those last 2 had me questioning what might have been talked about and why.
Good news ya control your own destiny. Need to find a way to capitalize on drives and somehow stop these penalties. Go Blue!
