Inside the locker room: Tennessee players wonder what might have been after disappointing Texas loss
Summary
Pick/market: Tennessee played well enough on defense and special teams to capitalize on an exciting scene and knock off No.
Tennessee played well enough on defense and special teams to capitalize on an exciting scene and knock off No. 1 Texas on Saturday at Neyland Stadium, but a miserable afternoon on offense turned out to be the culprit in a 20-17 loss to the visiting Longhorns. In its SEC opener, the Vols (3-1, 0-1 SEC) held Texas to just 262 yards and 14 first downs thanks to six sacks and 3-of-12 third-down conversions. Tennessee got a game-tying punt-return touchdown from Qua Moss in the third quarter, too. But the offense had a miserable showing, scoring just one touchdown and allowing 10 Texas sacks. Here’s what four Tennessee players – linebackers Arion Carter and Amare Campbell, wide receivers Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley and punter Jackson Ross – said after the frustrating loss to Texas. (NOTE: Moss, freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon and defensive lineman Xavier Gilliam were not available for postgame interviews because they were receiving treatment per a Tennessee official.)
