Alabama tight end Josh Ford said he was punched multiple times by South Carolina defensive end Dylan Stewart in the Tide's 49-18 win Saturday over the Gamecocks.
ESPN cameras showed Stewart punching Ford in the helmet following a Daniel Hill touchdown run in the fourth quarter after Ford stood over Stewart, on the ground, following the play. Stewart was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul on the play but was not ejected.
"Man, he's a great player," Ford said with a smile post game. "We had a lot of fun today. I think he punched me three times, but it was awesome. It was a good battle."
Asked if he said anything to Stewart, Ford responded while smiling, "Man, I was just like, 'Man, you're good. You're a great guy.' He didn't like that."
Later, Ford said, "I remember a few plays today where me and Dylan Stewart were making eye contact before a play. I told him, 'I'm swaying back.' I'm coming for you. It was a lot of fun."
Asked what Stewart said back to him, Ford said with a smile, "Oh, I don't know. There was a lot of hits, so I probably forgot what he said. We had a lot of fun. It was awesome. I love those battles, man. It makes me better."
Stewart, in his second game back from injury, played limited snaps and finished with no tackles and one quarterback hit.
Ford, a junior transfer from Oklahoma State, caught a one-handed, 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
