Jason Caldwell's View From The Field: Tigers get home SEC win but it's not easy
Summary
OL/LB: I agree that something is very different with the stadium atmosphere but I wonder how much of that is just the changes in culture over time (with the game in general).
JasonCaldwell said... (original post) A win is a win, butAuburn finally won a home SEC game once again after what seems like forever, but it was far from easy. It has been since 2... show more I agree that something is very different with the stadium atmosphere but I wonder how much of that is just the changes in culture over time (with the game in general). Seems much more like you are watching a show then participating in an event. I was there for the UF game and the overall experience was completely different than when I remember from an on-campus SEC game. Mind you, I have been to plenty of games on campus ... my brother and I go to all the AU-UF games so we were at the last one in the swamp and the one before that in Auburn. That was last in Auburn 4 or 5 years ago with my girlfriend and her daughter her the Kentucky game. This was just after the big board was installed in the South end zone. The change from then to now was stark. Back then the video board was interesting but not the center of the show like it is now. Additionally, the way they've added all the music and other stuff is different. You can barely hear the band and whatnot these days and most of the volume seems to come out of the PA system. There are peaks where the crowd gets really into it and you hear that deafening roar but there isn't the sustained volume that you used to hear. Part of that comes from the way the game unfolded but I think part of it is that the 'show' part of the video boards and PA system music necessarily ebbs and flows kind of replaces the crowd. The third/fourth quarter real was new for me this visit and somewhat disappointing. Didn't like that it was centered on the video board so much. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the swag surf but having something that's centered around the players on the field and then interacting with the fans would definitely be better than just a video and fireworks. All in all Auburn is still a great place to go for a football game, the town and campus is beautiful and just a pleasure to walk around and experience. Everything in and around the stadium on game day it is fantastic. I'm just not sure the 'new school' music and video driven in stadium experience is as compelling. Maybe it's the case that these all fears have people being a little more reserved, I definitely saw that in my section (section 4) and when the team improves that will improve. But that said, I would much rather than focus on ways to use the video boards and PA system to focus on the crowd and the players in the band more than just music and videos.
