Florida's 52-28 victory Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium over Ole Miss resulted in UF making the second-largest leap of any team in the latest Associated Press' Top 25 poll, released Sunday afternoon by the outlet.
The Gators moved up to No. 8from No. 21 after UF secured its highest-ranked win in 11 years, since defeating a then-No. 3 ranked Ole Miss team at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in 2015. The Rebels dropped five spots to No. 9 following the loss in The Swamp.
Florida's impressive start offensively under offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner continued as Sumrall's team reached 214 points on the season, the most points scored by any UF head coach through his first four games in Gainesville, and Sumrall became the first coach in SEC history to score 200-plus points in his first four games. For the sake of comparison, the Gators are 45 points shy of matching their total from the 2025 season.
Florida has scored at least 44 points in each of the first four games of the season for the first time since the 2001 campaign under Steve Spurrier (49, 55, 44, 52). The Gators last totaled 40-plus points in four-straight games in 2008. The Gators' 302 rushing yards marked their most since Sept. 9, 2023 vs. McNeese (327) and most vs. an SEC team since Nov. 11, 2022 vs. South Carolina (374).
"I think the sky's the limit. As we started to have some attrition at receiver tonight, it felt like maybe we were going to have to change how we played, play the game of more 12 personnel with two tight ends, pick and choose our spots to take some shots down the field in throw game. So it forced us a little bit to maybe at halftime recalibrate," Sumrall, asked about the ceiling of Florida's offense, said in the aftermath of Saturday's contest. "But, look, we've been really efficient at scoring points per drive, points per possession this year, and if we do that, we'll have a chance every week. And we just have to continue to capitalize on our opportunities.
Facing a high-powered offense in Ole Miss, albeit one missing star running back Kewan Lacy, Florida's defense won the turnover battle, and Sumrall came away with the opinion the unit rattled Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss despite the passer's 25-of-34 performance for 298 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the game's closing minutes. As expected, Chambliss did damage with his legs, too, with a team-leading 44 rushing yards along with a pair of scores on the ground.
The Gators, off to their first 4-0 start since the 2019 season, now turn their attention to a road contest at Missouri Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in Columbia. The Tigers dropped out of the AP Top 25 after falling at No. 16 Mississippi State. Saturday's game between UF and Missouri will be broadcast on ABC.
"Just grateful for the win, excited about the direction we're headed. We have not arrived. We have so much room to grow and get better," Sumrall said. "And we still have to do that or we're not going to be pleased with outcomes that we have coming up."
