Let me start by saying that I do not consume any media analysis content from this site (or any other... show more Coach, of all the good points here, the one I’ve been wondering about the most is the scheme/personnel combo where you talk about Will Anderson, Jr. That was later stages Saban (because we ain’t ever going back to 2012ish defense after the offensive breakthroughs that happened in the mid 2010s) and they had Anderson, an edge opposite that could make negative plays, DTs who could occupy multiple blockers, LBs who could move laterally and DBs (Saban, Kirby and Pete were all DBs) who were smarter assignment based system guys. It’s just being contrarian to say that defense in the aggregate wasnt effective. But even with really good players who had been in the system multiple years that defense was susceptible to pre snap motion, misdirection and combo routes if you could hold the edge. I do wonder if the complexity of the assignments is too challenging in a heavy portal system if you don’t have lots of future NFL guys like we did in 2024. Unlike a lot of people who’ve been posting in here the last 24 hours, I’m not football smart enough to say if my hypothesis is anywhere close to right or horrendously bad. I’m also wondering if that heavy misdirection offense we faced yesterday is our Kryptonite based on scheme and we’re better off facing more traditional offenses like UGA and TX. My novice understanding also shouts that we really need to win 1st downs and try to make teams one dimensional even more than most teams do.
