Rewatched the Game from Skycast View
Summary
Injury: I rewatched the view from the skycam view via YouTubetv and a few things stood out to me: Offense: play calling was not the issue.
I rewatched the view from the skycam view via YouTubetv and a few things stood out to me: Offense: play calling was not the issue. There were a lot of opportunities to make plays. Those plays were missed early and often. Then, we made adjustments to make things easier (not just at halftime but throughout) and those easier plays were then missed again. Offense - a lot of people saying we don’t mix our schemes enough up front for run plays or run to different gaps - to me, it looked like every time we tried to run outside/off the edge - 5 to 7, we got blown up because our backup interior couldn’t keep up with their inside, and they continuously set the edge well. I saw many counters via zone and trap - which are off tackle, typically, and hardly any succeeded. I do want to reiterate we were already playing outmanned, then our best Guard with experience went out in the first drive. Offense - on the spy piece, part of what also occurs when a running qb is being spied, the o line has to pass off blocks differently - this communication suffered mid snap because of the switches we had to make. Offense - Faizon missed the read to throw to SO many digs and curls in the middle of the field that were open, especially early, and when he started seeing them because we made those his earlier reads in second half, he missed those throws. Offense - I fully expect Faizon to get better at the short and intermediate throws. Offense - I fully expect our backup guards to do fine and communicate well against the rest of the schedule, barring more major injuries, but it sure would be nice to get positive news on Moe. Defense - nervous about Qua, very nervous. The TD drive they scored was basically an assault on that position from the air and run to where he’d come up. Defense - I expect us to get a serviceable backup there but needs to happen quickly, and we need progress quickly and some good news for Qua. Offense - TK needs to assert himself at receiver the next two weeks. Offense - I don’t blame our 1 & 2 receivers at all. Most of the game they were running routes on 7-8 defenders. Both of them and Brame + Thomas were still consistently open, and Texas is one of if not the best backend we’ll face this year as well. Texas had a good gameplan overall and knew that they’d confuse our backup lineman/overpower them and confuse/rattle Faizon, so another reason we didn’t see deep completions is because they made a point to be very physical with our receivers while the ball was in the air as well. They knew that even if they got a pass interference call, they’d play the numbers game and stop a long drive from the inexperience, instead of getting beat deep. Throw on the first drive to RJ and throw to Matthews after half are great examples - perfect balls, held like crazy, got away with it by forcing mishaps by our inexperience/backups from QB and line.
