Jamey's Thoughts from the Weekend
Summary
Pick/market: Jamey here with the thoughts from the weekend.
Hey y’all! Jamey here with the thoughts from the weekend. In a lot of ways, that summarized the divide between a Power Four school and a G6 school right now. WSU did some good things. They did some bad things. But ultimately, the talent disparity showed up. I was vocal that the G6 could compete with the P4. But ultimately, you're looking at two G6 wins across the whole season. There's a gap right now. All of that said, you can't just shrug your shoulders and say well, they have more money. Sure, there are plays that were made yesterday that WSU couldn't answer. Noah Fifita makes throws that very few can. Arizona has some serious talent on defense, especially up front. But WSU made way too many self-inflicted errors. The first Arizona TD, Kyle Peterson just gets caught ball-watching. Don't believe he played again after that. You saw good from Caden Pinnick. You also saw a mistimed slide, a couple of BAD interceptions (got away with one), a bad fumble etc. He's a young quarterback and he's going through the growing pains of being a young quarterback. The good news is, he can still get better. And WSU will need him to. Actually thought the OL was okay yesterday. Lot of the pressure came from blitzes and poor awareness from Pinnick. They need a counter to a blitz, and didn't have one. Defense played their tails off. But they ran out of gas. Same as Kansas State. There is an aspect of depth those teams have. WSU's is thin as a G6 team and with the injuries. They're missing Jalil Tucker, Michael Hughes and Malachi Wrice right now. The drop-off from Zunk and McLain to Beatty and Lecuona right now is big. You'd have loved to get one of these three games. But it was always a realistic possibility that you wouldn't. All three of these teams are likely going to bowls (well maybe not UW, more on that in a minute). It was as difficult a landing as possible for a first-time head coach and play caller. There's been mistakes. Miller's playcalling was better the last two weeks. Think Kirby's input helped. But they're both still growing. There's going to be some growing pains on the job. Have either been perfect? No. All of that to say, the damnation of any coach after four games is excessive. Through four games last year, Jimmy Rogers' defense had given up 118 points in the last two games. Things got better from there. Will Kirby Moore be the guy? We can't say after four games. He could've gone 4-0 and we still wouldn't be able to say. Next week will be an important litmus test. You've faced three times a level above and one team a level above. Now is where you will face teams on largely even footing. Five games is still too few to fully judge a coaching staff but if they lose to Fresno State at home, there certainly may be some questions to ask. But ultimately, this program is on its third coach in three years. That's a pretty difficult mountain to climb. Rogers avoided the first-year coach hangover by bringing his entire roster from SDSU. Moore didn't have that luxury. Ridiculous hit in the Oregon-USC game last night. Dirty, dirty play. The pratfall for Washington has been amusing. The snake oil well has dried up from Fisch. Pac-12 looks wide open. Boise State looks good. Not sold on Oregon State yet. Everyone else looks mediocre to poor.
