In so doing, Jen also systematically isolated CLR's performance from the off-field components of the program. He got the facilitiy he wanted, he got a premiere GM to optimize his roster, he got $40 million in NIL commitments, and he got his DC and S&C coaches of choice. The remaining variable is him. Which makes it kind of hard to hide at performance review time.
Speaking of his DC, decades ago the late Tommy Prothro once mentioned that his teams' defensive schemes were designed so that the player with the least mental acuity (not the phrasing he used, but we live in different times now) could still understand his assignment on every anticipated call. Somehow the idea of having two different calls for different sides of the field or whatever struck me as having the potential to confuse our own players more than opponents' respective OCs. But I'm a long-term casual with untrained eyes, so I just offered a prayer to the football gods and hoped for the best.
