Uh let's see the the game. I thought that the best thing to come out of that was the fight and uh so much wanted that, you know, the uh ability to close the deal and finish a game. And um wish that it wasn't the the the um uh straits necessarily in the first, second, and third quarter to get us to where we got that really strong finish. But I'll take the finish. And those are things that we've been really working to get. I thought, you know, the first game you're able to see it and uh this last game um versus Latte, we were not able to do it. And so to get it in this one uh versus Colorado is is um that we want that to be a part of our identity and we want that to be something that every week uh we come out really strong in the fourth quarter and finish a game. And so I think that's a real strong positive. I think um you know the negatives that we're working on is consistency with the offensive line in terms of who's who's where and who's doing what with who and the timing and the physicality of all of it. I think we're behind schedule there. Um and uh this is a real important week to get uh up to pace. I think um DJ is going to play much stronger. I know just having that game under his belt from being off and being out of it to now being in it, um you could see him feel more comfortable as the game went on. And so I know that he's going to have a fire and hunger this week. And so I'm looking forward to um utilizing that. And then I think, you know, the um the other piece of it is trying to get to where we can play complimentary football throughout. I think the last couple weeks offensively um you know putting the defense in tough situations where they've had to come out really fight to um to kind of keep the game in check until you know um we can step up uh on whatever side of it special teams or offense. And so I think to be able to play all three sides for four quarters is something that we're really searching for. Take any questions you guys got. Dave, uh, last three weeks, 29 penalties. Um, how much of that is just, you know, plays that are coming, try to be aggressive and making a play, and how much of it is, you know, pre- snap things that y'all have to get cleaned up and like how do you reduce that number? You know, um what's the toughest thing about all of that is that the tough, smart, dependable, you know, the tough so toughness to me would be um first of all, we got to be able to reset. So like the mental will drive the physical and so if something uh negative were to happen, can you um can you learn from it? Can you drop it? And then can you move on? and so that you're not kind of carrying it with you so that one bad play doesn't become three bad drives or a bad quarter or a bad half. And so I think when I look at that I think there's been there's been some um uh some success in that area. I think with both um people and with units and I think that's something that in our culture uh the reset and just the the breathing and the techniques that we use and just I think the focus on that has been I feel good about where that is and where that's going. I think the toughness physicality um I think offensively we're still looking for that line of scrimmage wise. I think defensively you're seeing it. I think special teams you're seeing it. I think individuals you're seeing it. You know, Jaden Porter had a bunch of uh DBs that are on the sidelines blocking them down the field and Hawkins Paulie is playing the most physical ball he's ever played and I think we got to get it offensively where it kind of come gets in phase of it. But that toughness thing, man, we've been talking about that since January, you know, and this was all based upon, hey, here's the money that we can spend. I hate bringing up money, but I think that's where it starts, guys. It totally starts there. You look at the the offense in the last two years, well, we spent a lot of money on that offense, right? And we're spending a lot of money on this defense right now. And so, I think if you just follow the money, you see where things are at. And so, that doesn't mean that you can't play well if you're not spending. And that doesn't mean that you, you know, you can't play poorly if you are spending. It just, I think that's where you start. And so, knowing we're, hey, this is what we're spending and everything else, we're going to have to be tough. Second thing was we're going to have to be smart because we're not going to be able we can't hurt ourselves in these one-sore games. We can't do that. And so that knowing that we're doing that when um you take a look at the team in December and January and you kind of have an idea of what it is and what it's going to be knowing that hey this is how this is has to operate dude and then to be doing it is frustrating. Very frustrating. But I would say on top of that, you know, the GPA last year in spring or the last spring was the highest GPA Baylor football's ever had. The GPA right now, like if school ended right now, we have a 3-2, which would be breaking what we did in spring. And so these are good kids and they're not I look at the penalties, they're not personal foul penalties really. They're not like cheap shots. there. A great example uh in one Gavin Freeman gets hit on a on a glance on a slant and there's two guys coming at him and he gets shook up and really he should have we were calling him to come off the field. He doesn't come off the field, he stays on and he's at the line of scrimmage and he's working through all the cobwebs and he's twitching and then that's a false start. And so there's a bunch of stuff like that all throughout, right? Um, then there's like anxiety with guys that are it's a big- time moment and we've got to do the breathing. We got to do all the things that we're talking about to be better. And so I think um, you know, I don't think it's it's stuff where it's dirty players or it's um necessarily even undisiplined players. I think we have to be we have to be tougher players in a sense, smarter players. And so I think that's that's an area that really has to improve. that adds to the dependability part. You know, uh I think offensively to have four quarters of football where uh you can be consistent score. I think we're we're hunting that up. You know, there's been a dip in the third quarter that we cannot continue to do. And I think the penalties have a have a big thing have a a big say in that right now. I think that part gets cleaned up. I think the production on offense will be much better. It's a long answer to your question. >> Sorry, you were clearly high on defense andvious obviously you spent money on it. Has that group lived up to your expectations, exceeded your expectations? Is this kind of play what you expected from? >> Yeah, you know, I think the um the Joe and his his staff have done a great job. I they do they connect with their players, their players play for them. Um, you know, I think the the schematic part of um of playing the shrinks and putting people in the right spots and all that is for sure there, but I think the juice is really in that the players are playing hard for them. And so I think I think it starts there. But then, you know, when you have a rotation of D lineman and defensive ends that you could roll through and you can go three deep and feel good about a guy making a play, that's different from what it's been. And um I think, you know, the um the thing I would say that we can get better at is the tackling. I think that's showed up um really for the first time this year is the missed tackles. And so I that's a huge uh area of emphasis because we're going to be put in those spots. I have so much respect for um Arizona State and u both Kenny and then uh Aoyo and just the how they they um it's it's a very smart attack. Um they're very intentional on what they do and how they identify you and um and uh kind of the plans that they put together. It's it's one of those things where you watch them, it's like, "Oh, they're doing this because of that. they've got this figured out and so um it's going to be a major test. The coaching um the um the coaching kind of contest is going to be a good one this week. A lot of respect to them. >> I know you'll have, you know, a system that tells you all when to go on fourth and not to, but how much does Palmer kind of factor into that when you know he can kind of, you know, flip the field any chance basically? >> Yeah. Yeah. He did a great job of that. And so I it was a huge part of the game. I thought both uh really all throughout special teams I thought and even the the kickoff I thought guys were flying down the field and there's physicality throughout and uh both the punt protection and then kind of the tackling on punt and so um definitely that's something to where you know depending on the flow of the game and how that's going like are we going to have to score score here or uh can we play just field position and make them have to drive the distance. That's certainly um that's certainly a thing that shows up. >> You all cycle through some guys at right guard. I know I'm pretty sure you all think of Cole Red. What did you see from him and what are you seeing from that position specifically? >> We got to get healthy there. Um we've got to get healthy. You know, I think one of the one of the things that has been a struggle is throughout practice have the same uh same guys going the whole entire time. And so, um, that showed up, uh, particularly, uh, this last game. And so, to be able to to start a week and end a week, same guys, and then have those guys, um, see what they've saw throughout the week on Saturday and and, uh, you know, execute effectively. That's what our goal is. But, you know, the um, there's been whether it's been Cooper, you know, he's played some there. Um or um gosh, who who did you just bring up? Cole Red. Yeah, Cole. Cole's played both tackle positions and and guard. And so he's got great flexibility. And um you know, when you bring him inside and we're running kind of inside zone and we're working the bump combos and the doubles, he he really adds some value there. And so um yeah, we just have to be healthy and be able to get the the the right guys the reps the the whole time. Dave, is that part of why y'all struggled maybe against the stunts and slants and stuff like that as opposed to just head on hand? >> Well, yeah. I think um it's probably goes a little bit deeper than that. You know, I the I think the we have to get that done. I think we're we're behind schedule with that and I thought that the the best that we've done is this last game and so that's that that was a positive. thought that, you know, they Colorado wasn't a huge twist team compared to the other teams that we played. Um, uh, they were much more of a get off and penetrate and all that, but they twisted because of the tape that we put on, uh, or the the what we put on tape. And so, we were able to hand handle it better than what we've had. And but it's still not good enough. And we still have to improve. You know, I think, uh, Arizona State is not a huge twist team either. They're more of a pressure team and a vertical attack team, but we're anticipating uh stunts and twists just because of uh our tape. >> Dave, what comes first? Learning how to win >> or having killer instinct once you start to win like that game on >> obviously next thing you know it's tied and you kind of controlled that game. Is that something you got to win enough to then have that? You know, I I think you can say who you're going to be and then just pound that in and so that you can execute that when those situations come up because that's going to come up in practice. That's going to come up in a weightlifting session. That's going to come up in a meeting. You know, you're talking you're talking about the score is not a distraction is the what you're what you're saying. It's like I'm looking up at the score. I'm seeing the time left. I'm making judgments on hey, we're good. this is in the bag. We got this. And so I'm I'm gonna uh I'm gonna relax a little bit here. I'm going to take it easy here. Obviously, that's what you don't want to do. And so when you're focused in the moment and you're focused on what you're doing, then the score is a distraction. Um and so that's what you're that's what you're saying. And and I think, you know, really we're kind of talking about one side of the ball there. And because the the other side's fighting their butt off and so we got to get it to where the execution level and the focus is is u uh higher on the offensive side and so we're really working to get that done. >> Dave, first uh true road game. Obviously the Auburn game was basically a road game. >> Uh do you approach that any differently? >> No. You know, it's going to be um it's going to be us versus all them. And so I think at times that can be uh pretty helpful in terms of um uh using energy and um turning around whatever's kind of coming at you to help f fuel you. Uh, but you know, last time I played there was at was at Wisconsin and um Joel Stav I think we wanted to uh take a knee and hand the ball to ref and try to get a um um I think it was a field goal at the end and uh we were we weren't able to do that and it was a walk-off. I remember the refs just running off the field and uh it was a bad bad deal and so um just my memories of that game though is very tough place to play. It's just loud and at night it can be electric and so uh we're we'll we're in for it and we'll be ready for it. >> Is there anything that they do particularly well that you preparing for this week? >> Uh Arizona State. Yeah. So offensively, uh they've got a quarterback that makes really good decisions. He's able to see kind of the shells and and go to, you know, there's the man stuff he's looking at and the zone stuff he's looking at. They've got some receivers that they move around some. Uh they'll put um two pretty elite receivers in the same side to the boundary and put a tight end and uh another receiver to the field and they'll work that boundary side and um kind of uh beat you up over there. Their running backs are really physical. I think their their offensive line's a good one. Their tight ends are athletic, long guys. And then defensively, I think they they make you earn it. And so, um, they'll play off with corners at times, um, and, uh, they'll play quarters and three deep and man, but they'll make they play in such a way that it's 8, nine, 10 play drives. And so, just so important for us that in the process of all of that, we try to find some explosives, but also we don't go backwards with a penalty or or with a self-inflicted wound. um their their whole theory is teams are going to mess themselves up in trying to go 10 plays or eight plays and so um that's very much the fight on offense. >> Going into this game, we really didn't know Baylor's fullest potential this year with DJ out and a lot of other key players. So overall, were you really happy with what was on display at full strength this past weekend? >> We're still fighting to get it. I think we have to play cleaner. Um I think we, you know, we're still trying to get that rhythm. I think some some of it's been through injury um and just who's out there and all of it. Um I love the the toughness and I love the you know you look at like Gavin Freeman and his catch and run. You look at there's there's indiv individual performances there where you could just see that guys care man and they're sacrificing and they're all in and it matters to them. I think that's when I when I see it that's all over the tape. I think we got to get it to where we're playing more consistent though. We're playing smarter football. And so you look at that tough, smart, dependable. That that smart is something that we got to get fixed. >> Uh for guys like Jaden Porter and Devin Turner, how are they doing this week after being on the injury report last week, but still playing? >> Uh Devin Turner still working to get 100%. You know, he was able to play. I think he struggled in some of his movements. Uh who else did you mention? >> Jane Porter. Jame Porter, same thing. Yeah, same thing. I think um you know, for both of those guys, they may be working through it and then getting to the buy to where they're totally 100%. >> Yeah. >> Matt Clappenstein hasn't maybe had the best offensive season. >> Uh but I know he's important to that team. What What does he mean to the team from a leadership standpoint kind of off the field? >> Yeah. No, he he leads off the field. He leads on the field. Yeah. his blocking and his um his um uh his ability to uh communicate on the field and um whether it's in a huddle on the sidelines or whether it's on the field, you know, uh Klopp's one of the guys that know if if um he's he's a guy that's very aware and is able to pick up things and and can talk to anyone on the team and offer an inspiring word or to get them going and any of that. So, he's very much he's he's a he's a leader behind the scenes and he does it on the field about as good as anyone I've seen. >> We talked the other day about Gavin's play that he made. >> Yes. >> Uh it kind of blew up on on the internet like it was on Sports Center, it was on everything. Like is that something you guys can kind of point to, rally around like we need more of this? >> Yeah. Well, you know, um I think on special teams we're getting that and I think on defense we're getting that. And so I think on on offense, you know, I think that there's there's there's reps like that of Jaden Porter blocking. There's reps like that of uh Nate Kibble at times blocking. I think it needs to be more of just a consistent thing of guys all together because it could be if we're all in here in a team, it could be we're all doing it but then I'm not one play and then we're all doing it and someone else is not one play. I think we're off by one. And so I think to be able to um I think what that shows to me though is that it really matters. You that it it's a it's a really big deal and that uh you know I'm going to die for this. I'm gonna give everything I got for this. And so that's a good message to send. >> Dave, you mentioned some of the miss tackles early on Saturday, but the defense seemed to kind of lock that in as the game progressed. Was there like a moment that you saw that, you know, to see start to see that change uh open field tackling or was it more just like a gradual thing with >> his gradual thing? I think once you got closer to the fourth quarter, I think guys knew that it was time to to close the deal. I think when it got to where it was a it was a tie game, I think they were able to feel that. Um, you know, I think the the uh the score is a distraction kind of comes into play with some of that. But um yeah, that's going to be a huge emphasis in this game. I I feel like Arizona State does a good job of creating space, formations, and motions. Dave, >> thank you guys. Thank you.
