Even the first 10 scripted plays (or first couple series) are tossed if the offense gets off-schedule or gets behind the chains. OC’s do not call inside zone plays if the distance is 3rd and 12 (just because the script call for it). In 30 years of coaching at 3 different levels, not once have I been on a staff that scripted an on-side kick. Yes, the onside kick (a couple of variations) was always in the special team package and practiced in a Thursday or Friday full-game simulation script. But, it’s never etched in stone as to when to on-side kick. Fresno State on-side kicked to start the second half….because they were behind 17-14 and did not want Rice to get the ball and potentially go up 2 scores (along with the HC and Special Teams coach) seeing an alignment or personnel trend that would make the attempt potentially successful.
