Ernie Pyle rolling over in his grave
Summary
Pick/market: I read the story.
I read the story. The headline is clickbait, but the column is fine as a column, even though there are some takes with which I might not agree, but that's OK. It's a column and presented as such. I'll add this: College is training ground. They're college kids. They're learning. None of us were perfect in college and we all had plenty of "teaching moments." I know I certainly did. I do think social media's hot take world sometimes filters into too much writing by the college/young 20s group these days, but hey, to be fair, they grew up with social media. It's been around their entire lives. It's understandable. The No. 1 job of a writer covering a sporting event is to be a very careful observer, see details, understand context of occurrences, then present a description of event or a key storyline from an event — big play, big performance, etc. — with detail, context, and, if available, the perspective of the participants. College students also have seen two of the greatest years of IU football, including a year (16-0) that is highly likely never to be repeated again in the history of Indiana football, and a 20-game win streak that also is highly likely to be a historical high-water mark never to be reached again at Indiana. I do think it's surprising so many are glossing over IU winning 20 in a row considering how few Big Ten teams have done that since 1949. I'm all for the college students getting experience. I tend to give them lots of grace and am happy they have great opportunities to work, learn and grow.
