Fitz wasn't announced as the coach until December 1, and the portal opened 31-ish days later. If they would've canned him halfway, at least after UCLA. They could've gotten someone in there familiar with the team and what was needed or not, who was staying or not, etc. That was a HUGE killer keeping "hi diddly ho" around that long until 30 days before the portal opened. Fitz is the right coach. He is the most Dantonio guy you were getting. And he has won with less. But you can't give him a $20 bill and say, "Go buy yourself a steak dinner." You have to give him some resources. People act like he CHOSE to bring in a ton of lower conference/D2 guys (and some of them are pretty decent, like Bullard was a D2 guy, Soares a lower conference guy, and Fraley has been really good on the OL and from the FCS). But maybe, just maybe, that's all he had the budget for when you need 50 guys to spread the rest across you didn't use to retain what Smith left. And yes, I get that's the same line as Smith, but Smith was a flat-out bad coach. If you can't manage to do the sheer basics like the clock and use timeouts properly, as he exhibited multiple times, you lose your credibility. And go without 10+ penalties/procedural penalties in a game undisciplined. You can physically see Fitz knows what he is doing coaching unlike priors. The new AD needs to shake some trees and get some dollars for anything to change and have that ready before January. Remember, Spartan Ventures was only announced about a month before the portal. It was not close to being in place by then no matter what was verbally announced. I'm not sure why people thought that would have an instant 2026 impact (plus only about $290 mil of it goes to athletics, and not all to football). And the money is not a lump sum donation/release of funds either. It wasnt some large cartoon check that is instant money. But lets not pretend like the B10 isnt down across the board this year. Ohio State lost already (although look like the best team so far). Indiana looked like crap and almost got upset. Penn State got upset. Oregon was already upset. scUM lost 2 games. And the rest look about average. This isn't a year 5-6 B10 teams look pretty good ahead of the rest. FOURTEEN (14 of 18) B10 teams have already lost 1+ games after week 4. That's an insane stat, considering most had 3 weeks of cupcakes.
