I don’t think it’s possible to run a slow developmental program in today’s game for lower-to-middle-tier teams. Your higher ranked or recently productive players will be poached by bigger programs. It’s the reason why we celebrate Hall (and rightfully so) because he’s the exception to this rule. Fitz might be a cool guy and a culture fit for our program, but he’s not a fit for today’s game. These are concerns many brought up before he was hired and have come to fruition. You need a coach from a lower level who can bring over a roster full of guys with chemistry baked in. You don’t have to be Indiana, but you do have to meet win total expectations right away. If you meet those expectations, you can more easily hit the portal and maintain/build upon success. The way Fitz succeeds is no longer a viable pathway in today’s football. The sooner the AD realizes this reality the better.
