The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are the two SEC campuses that are closer to each other, as it is about an hour to Tuscaloosa from Starkville. These programs used to play each other every year, but with the expanded Southeastern Conference getting rid of divisions, the two teams have not met since 2023, which proved to be the final season for Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban, who retired following that season.
Alabama brought in Kaleb DeBoer to replace the legendary Saban, and it has been a mixed bag since he arrived in town. The Tide missed the College Football Playoff in his first season but did make the field last year and got a road win over Oklahoma to advance. However, the meeting with Indiana in the Rose Bowl was ugly. State fans understand the standard of Alabama football, and it is still to be seen if the new head coach can reach that level.
Alabama has gotten this season off to a fast start jumping out to 4-0 including a couple of conference wins. The Crimson Tide will make the short trip to Starkville this weekend looking to make it 5-0.
