For the second straight week, South Carolina saw a handful of freshmen take the field and play meaningful snaps in their first road game against Alabama on Saturday.
Two freshmen earned the start on Saturday as Darius Gray slid over from left tackle to right tackle as Jacarrius Peak entered the starting lineup for the first time this season. Gray played 69 snaps against the Crimson Tide.
On the other side of the ball, Julian Walker earned the first start of his career on Saturday. In 34 snaps played, Walker was credited with one tackle. With the suspension of Dylan Stewart that was announced on Sunday, Walker will continue to play a key role for Deion Barnes' room moving forward.
J'Zavien Currence entered the game at safety on the second defensive series. However, it was a tough night for Currence in his first road start as he would only play seven snaps defensively, in addition to his special teams work, after being beat on the Crimson Tide's first touchdown of the game. He finished the game with one tackle.
Defensive lineman Noah Clark made his SEC road game debut on the third defensive series of the night. The freshmen defensive tackle was not credited with any stats in 30 snaps played.
Clark was also already playing a key role in the defensive tackle rotation to start the season. However, depending on the health of Kelby Collins and Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, his role and snap count could increase on Saturday against Kentucky.
Early in the fourth quarter, Aiden Harris entered the game at defensive tackle and made the most of his opportunity as he tallied one tackle in four snaps played.
A handful of Gamecocks participated on Matthew Smiley's special teams on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Keenan Britt was spotted working with the kick return and punt return team. Kosci Barnes joined Britt on the punt return team. Currence worked on the kickoff team and was joined later in the game by Triston Lewis.
South Carolina will return to Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday to take on No. 24 Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. and will be televised on SEC Network.
