Thoughts on TCU's 21-13 loss to UCF; anything but magical
Summary
Pick/market: GP is still trying to basically run the same defense he was running in his heyday, but the offenses have changed.
GP is still trying to basically run the same defense he was running in his heyday, but the offenses have changed. The 4-2-5 was originally effective because it counteracted what the early spread offenses were doing, which was mostly zone scheme, quick game, and patterned routes. If one guy goes long, the other goes short, if one WR breaks in, the other breaks out etc. Offenses have adjusted and the scheme isn't built to stop what offenses are doing today. The biggest weakness being the inability to stop run schemes with multiple OL pulling. The 4-2 leaves too many bubbles and basically eliminates the ability to match numbers on the side of the ball when pullers happen. Lincoln Riley was the first to really figure this out and just abused us when he was at OU running counter. It's why I'm still shocked he hired GP only to watch Oregon gash them with weakside counter all night the other night.
