Trimester Report Card: Top and bottom performers a third of the way through the season
Summary
Pick/market: We're four games into the 2026 season and West Virginia University is 3-1 on the year.
We're four games into the 2026 season and West Virginia University is 3-1 on the year. There have been ups. There have been downs. For a broader look at the team and the top performers, let's go big picture with the scouts from ProFootballFocus. Here's a rundown of all the grades for the Mountaineers through four games.
Without further ado, let's take a look back.....
TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYERS (above 65.0, at least 50 snaps)
Michael Hawkins, QB - 89.4
DJ Epps, WR - 77.5
Amari Latimer, RB - 76.8
Cam Cook, RB - 76.1
Wes King, C - 70.1
Jaden Bray, WR - 66.7
Amare Grayson, RG - 66.1
Nick Krahe, LG - 65.0
Thoughts: Hawkins at the top, especially for the season as a whole, should not be surprising at all. PFF has him with higher marks for passing than rushing so far, but both very high. Epps did not have a great last game, but was so dominant in the first three that he's still well up there. Latimer and Cook have almost identical subgrades across the board. Ironically, Wes King - the highest graded lineman - is a better pass blocker (79.1) than run blocker (67.1).
TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYERS (above 65.0, at least 50 snaps)
Geimere Latimer, DB - 79.7
Nick Taylor, CB - 73.9
KJ Henson, DL - 69.8
Isaiah Patterson, LB - 69.3
Corey McIntyre Jr., DL - 69.0
Ashton Woods, LB - 68.1
Nate Gabriel, DL - 66.9
Thoughts: Still surprised to see Latimer at the very tip top here, especially with his tackling grade (53.0) being among the worst on the team for regulars on the defense. However, his other marks - including an 87.0 run defense grade - are high enough to lift him. Patterson still leads the team in tackles despite only playing about half the team's snaps. Taylor had a rough last game, but was at the top prior to the Oklahoma State game.
BOTTOM OFFENSIVE PLAYERS (below 65.0, at least 50 snaps)
Josh Sapp, TE - 49.3
Cam Ball, TE - 51.7
Carsten Casady, RT - 52.3
Josh Aisosa, LG - 57.2
Kevin Brown, LT - 58.8
Cyrus Traugh, WR - 60.7
John Neider, WR - 61.6
Ryan Ward, TE - 63.0
Thoughts: Ball is doing a decent job pass blocking (68.9), but struggles in run blocking and receiving. Sapp is the opposite, getting dinged hard for his pass blocking (28.9). The remainder of the offensive linemen down here in this group are all in a similar boat - just sort of so-so in both pass and run blocking.
BOTTOM DEFENSIVE PLAYERS (below 65.0, at least 50 snaps)
Andrew Powdrell, S - 52.2
David Afogho, DE - 53.1
Kamari Wilson, S - 53.4
Matt Sieg, S - 55.9
Emerson Joy, DL - 59.1
Da'Mare Williams, S - 59.7
Zeke Durham-Campbell, DL - 59.8
Keyshawn Robinson, CB - 60.4
Chams Diagne, CB - 61.1
Ben Cutter, LB - 61.1
Cam Torbor, LB - 62.6
Harper Holloman, Edge - 64.5
Thoughts: Four of the bottom six players on the defense are safeties. That's not great. Powdrell (48.6) and Wilson (45.0) are dinged hardest for their coverage, while Sieg is tanked by his tackling (35.8). Williams is sub par in every subgrade except tackling (66.9). Cutter (45.5) and Torbor (39.9) struggle in coverage from the linebacker position, which is the biggest reason they are down in this section.
