Kalen DeBoer updates status of four injured Alabama players before Mississippi State
Summary
Injury: Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer on Monday updated the status of two injured Tide offensive linemen before Saturday's game at Mississippi State.
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer on Monday updated the status of two injured Tide offensive linemen before Saturday's game at Mississippi State. DeBoer said right tackle Jayvin James is "very much questionable at this time." Tyrell Miller, a junior who played his first two seasons at the College of San Mateo, replaced James after his injury in the second half of Saturday's win over South Carolina. James was later seen wearing a walking boot. Left guard William Sanders suffered an upper-body injury in the second half against South Carolina but, "I would expect that he would be able to play on Saturday," DeBoer said. "Working through it here, but I would expect that he would be ready to go." Sanders was replaced by Mal Waldrep in the game. Alabama will release its initial SEC availability of the week on Wednesday evening. In addition to the two offensive linemen, Alabama played against South Carolina without outside linebacker Justin Hill (lower extremity) and defensive end Desmond Umeozulu (turf toe). Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said Monday that both players are "still gonna be out for a bit." DeBoer added that Umeozulu will be out "further into the season" than Hill but did not specify timelines for either player beyond that. The absence of Hill and Umeozulu led to an uptick in snaps for Jah-Marien Latham and Fatutoa Henry on the edge, Wommack said, while starters Yhonzae Pierre and Devan Thompkins also saw their playing time increase. Safety Zavier Mincey did not play in Saturday's win over South Carolina after suffering an injury during pregame warmups, DeBoer said. Mincey also did not play against Florida State but was listed as available on the SEC availability report against South Carolina.
