Play calling

It’s fair game for us fans - especially those who pay good money to attend these games - to criticize the playcalling. We all do it, including yours truly. So fire away. That being said, we might keep these things in mind when rendering our critiques about how someone else is doing his job: Nobody deliberately calls a bad play. It’s easy to criticize a play after everyone knows it didn’t work. We don’t know the reason(s) why the OC called the play in the first place. There may have been one or more really good reasons to call a play that turned out to be a bad one. Play calls don’t come with a money back guarantee. We often don’t know the reason(s) why the play didn’t work. Maybe it was a great call and the execution was poor or off just enough to kill it. Or the defense shifted at the last second. Or it was a good call initially and the QB either checked into a bad one or made a bad decision post-snap on a zone read or RPO. Or the other team got lucky. Or the other team is just better. Sh*t happens. OC’s don’t operate in a vacuum. There’s a DC on the other side trying his best to counter everything the OC does. Sometimes the other guy wins. That’s why he’s a DC at the major college level. Even an unproductive play might be useful if it helps set up a successful one later on. OK. Rant over. (Personally I think we need to start throwing more on first down).
