PJ the Turtle: A Statistical Analysis
Summary
Pick/market: First of all great work investigating this I don’t really agree with some of your takeaways.
First of all great work investigating this I don’t really agree with some of your takeaways. I don’t think it’s fair to say Minnesota protects our leads significantly better than our peers when entering the 4th quarter up 8 or fewer points. An 11 game sample at 9-2 is pretty insignificant. If we were 8-3 in such game we’d be bang average at 72.7 % That is certainly a surprisingly positive statistic though as I never would have guessd it This doesnt take in to account the losses we’ve had when leading by more than 8 points going in to the 4th quarter. An example would be the Northwestern game of 3 years ago. It also doesn’t take in to account a game like last year at Northwestern where we blew a 14 point 3rd quarter lead. There are teams, like Iowa, that never lose in those situations when they are up 2 TD’s but that hasn’t been us If we’re going to claim we win on the margins, then we probably shouldn’t be making decisions that hurt us (by your numbers) even if those decisions have not hurt us in the W/L column yet (per your numbers)
