Spring Intel | Final notes from Wisconsin's spring camp
Summary
Wisconsin QBs finished spring strong; Colton Joseph sharp in live action, hitting Henry and Domingeaux; Ryan Hopkins impressing as freshman.
MADISON, Wis. — A chilly, rainy morning wasn't the picture perfect end to Wisconsin's spring camp, but the energy on the field was undeterred. The Badgers closed out their final spring practice on Wednesday morning, initiating a long march toward fall camp in late July/early August. UW's most physical scrimmage-like session took place on Saturday, and things dialed back in a lighter final week. But with some live action and an active special teams period to finish out camp, there was an opportunity for some closing standout moments this spring. QBs finish out strong Wisconsin's quarterbacks took some time to settle in this spring, but the unit soared through the finish line. The passing game has trended up in recent weeks, and that progress showed Wednesday with a number of standout throws during live action. Colton Joseph attacked the defense over the middle, hitting wideouts Tyrell Henry and Jaylon Domingeaux through the prodding hands of the defense. He found his receivers in stride as he delivered in the pocket and operated on the move, closing out his spring with a clean performance. Ryan Hopkins, who has continued to impress ahead of his freshman year, accumulated a few more standout moments to wrap up camp. He layered throws over the defense to wide receiver Chris Brooks Jr. and tight end Emmett Bork for key completions, looking to push the ball downfield in the face of defensive pressure. Receivers continuing to battle Wisconsin's wide receiver room has seemed to come into its own over the past couple of weeks, as a select group of names continue to make a consistent impact. The unit shined again on Wednesday morning as they battled for some key completions. UW's pass catchers shook off the stiff pressure with tough contested catches from Brooks, Henry and Domingeaux over the middle. Transfer receiver Zion Kearney tracked down a one-handed grab in the end zone and wideout Eugene Hilton Jr. pulled in a high-concentration catch for a score near the end of practice. The playmaking edge of Wisconsin's receiving corps has started to emerge as of late, and the group produced a prominent finish to camp. Special teams notes The final portion of Wisconsin's last spring practice involved some live kick off, punting and field goal work. The Badgers, who brought special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky on board this offseason, battled throughout the high-energy period. It began with a 100-plus yard kick return for a touchdown from Hilton, sending the sideline into a frenzy as he cut outside, surged past the coverage and hurried into the end zone. Wisconsin also saw a field goal attempt blocked and returned for a score. The kicking was consistent between place kicker Gavin Lahm and punter Sean West. But the chance to go full speed on special teams allowed some big plays to unfold.
