Here's everything Steve Sarkisian said Monday about Texas' subpar offense, leaky special teams, discipline/penalties and much more heading into the Longhorns' (4-0, 1-0 SEC) bye this week before heading to the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma (2-2, 0-1) on Oct. 10 at 2:30 pm CT (on ABC).
On the offense's performance in a 20-17 win at Tennessee:
"To get the ball in that environment and go seven plays, 75 yards, to take the lead seven-to-nothing on the road, I thought was really big for us about owning the environment, owning the arena.
"I've never been to a game where the opposing fans were all in their seats by the time we took pregame warmups, and so that was a different environment and credit to Tennessee. They did a heck of a job of creating that environment and all that came with it. Air Force One flying overhead, all the things. So I think that was a really cool way to start.
"From that point forward until about the second to last offensive drive, we did not play very good offensive football. I'd love to say it was this or that. It literally was us taking turns of not doing the things that we had practiced to do, and that was unfortunate, because sometimes it's easier to say this one position group or this one player or this one thing was the issue, and it really wasn't.
"I think most importantly, we've got to do our job. We've got to trust our training offensively to get that done, and that'll be the task this week throughout the bye week of where we need to improve offensively and where we can build upon that.
"Again, I'd love to say, man, it was just the right tackle, or the right guard, or the center, or the left guard, or the tight ends. But it was like each play, somebody else was kind of taking their turn. So we've got to get that rectified. We've got to get these guys believing in their training and trusting their training to perform.
"I thought they came back and had a really critical drive in the fourth quarter when we scored hit Wingo on the third-down conversion, then the screen, and then Raleek [Brown] obviously scoring the touchdown. So it was kind of bookending the game - how we started the game, and then kind of how we finished. In the middle was clearly not good enough for the way we want to play offensive football."
