Three things I think, three things I know this week
Summary
QB/OL: Interesting to me that Mike posed the OL question at this stage of the season.
Interesting to me that Mike posed the OL question at this stage of the season. To me, right now the group seems…very serviceable. Certainly better than last year. Is that bad? I don’t think so, but I think the expectations around here were a bit lofty. I know Rick is back, and he’s forgotten more about coaching the position than I’ll ever know, but he’s got a new group that never played together. It’s going to be WIP. King looks like a great lunch pail guy. Krahe has been pretty solid I think, and so has Grayson (though he seems to catch some flak here most weekends). The tackles struggle in pass pro, no question, (but Hawkins holds the ball, and he’s a scrambling QB, that doesn’t help), and it’s not a group that seems physical enough to blow the doors off a d line right now. On Brown, I think there’s a reason so few true freshman start at tackle, much less left tackle. He’s best moving forward when he’s man on. He’s struggling in space and doesn’t climb well yet. (Curious - I certainly don’t know what he weighs, but I’m going to guess he’s in the low to mid 290’s by a late Saturday afternoon). He’s taking his lumps. He’ll probably be better for it. But like, what are we looking for here? I think it’s fine. The run game is working. Rich isn’t going to reinvent himself. I do wonder a bit though if this 5 stays the same, either in personnel or position, before we get to or after the bye.
